Megan Rowland, 25, is one of the land and deer managers on the Gordonbush estate, in the far northern Highlands of Scotland, in Sutherland. Her passion for the outdoors and wildlife is utilised by her work in habitat management and taking clients deer stalking, and has won her recognition and industry awards.

Audrey Watson got into deer stalking while working as an ecologist for the National Forest. In 2004, she met her husband through a deer management group, and part of their honeymoon included a stalking trip to New Zealand. Now a Deer Officer for BASC, she inspires others to try deer stalking.

Roe deer are the smallest of the British native deer species and since childhood, they have fascinated me. I live in Fife, Scotland, and we have an abundant and healthy population of roe deer due to a plentiful food supply, woodland shelter, and mild weather. Before I stalked deer with a rifle, I stalked them with my camera and always enjoyed getting up close to them.

Jade Cruickshank from Aberdeenshire, loves nothing more than going out deer stalking and game shooting to put food on the table for her young family. She is a keen clay shot, but her passion lies with rifle shooting and progressing with her deer stalking. There’s no more exciting or challenging way to hunt muntjac than to stalk them by sound. Listening out for a barking muntjac and then creeping up to it in dense cover without it first spotting you requires fieldcraft of the first order, plus a big slice of good fortune. Chances to hunt muntjac in this way come only rarely, but if you get the opportunity, then grab it with both hands. 

You’ve got to really understand muntjac in order to hunt them. People expect them to behave like other smaller deer species such as roe, but they don’t. Successful muntjac stalking is all about understanding your quarry and then adopting the right hunting technique, which could be stalking quietly on foot, sitting in a high seat or even using a call.
